The good news is these little Ecoboost motors strike a great balance between healthy performance and fantastic economy. That leaves the 1.0-litre as the only other petrol Ecoboost engine, though it is offered with the option of mild-hybrid (MHEV) technology for a circa 10% mpg boost. The RS isn’t being invited back for the latest generation, with the ST instead inheriting its (de-tuned) 2.3-litre Ecoboost engine (or again the turbodiesel).

The Focus RS is top of the tree with a 2.3-litre Ecoboost petrol engine, four-wheel drive, manual transmission and even a drift mode! The Focus Electric is out there somewhere, but sold in tiny numbers. Six-speed automatic gearboxes are also available. It comes with either a 2.0-litre petrol or diesel engine, and hatchback or even estate body styles. The ST is your first step on the Focus hot hatch ladder, but this is not your old-school hot hatch. Later mainstream petrol models come with either 1.0-litre or 1.5-litre Ecoboost engines, while the TDCi diesels stretch from 1.5-litre to 2.0-litre capacities. The third-generation (2011-2018) Focus introduced a broad range of petrol and diesel engines.
